What is something others do that sparks your admiration?

Have you ever been out in the world, lost in your thoughts, and then a kind stranger stops you in your tracks with a compliment? Maybe it was about your outfit, your smile, or the way you carry yourself. Whatever it was, their words may have lingered with you long after they walked away, leaving you feeling seen, valued, and appreciated.

I deeply admire people who go out of their way to share these random acts of kindness. Compliments, especially from strangers, carry a special weight. They’re spontaneous, genuine, and often unfiltered by the familiarity that comes with close relationships. It’s one thing when someone you know tells you how great you look, but when a stranger notices something wonderful about you, it feels like the universe just winked in your direction.

These small moments of connection are profoundly powerful. They have the ability to shift our perspectives, brighten our moods, and remind us of the goodness that still exists in the world. And yet, giving compliments to strangers takes a certain kind of bravery. It requires stepping outside of your comfort zone to acknowledge someone else’s beauty, effort, or presence.

Why Compliments Matter

In a world where negativity can often overshadow the light, compliments are small but mighty acts of resistance. They remind us that people are paying attention, that we’re not invisible, and that our efforts—no matter how small—are noticed.

A kind word can be the boost someone didn’t know they needed. That mom juggling groceries and a toddler might feel utterly drained until someone tells her, “You’re doing an amazing job.” That teenager wearing a bold, unconventional outfit might feel insecure until someone says, “I love your style.”

I’ve often wondered how many lives have been changed by a simple compliment. How many people have stepped a little more boldly into their purpose or walked with their head held higher because of the courage someone else showed in speaking life into them?

Practicing Compliment Courage

If I’m being honest, I sometimes hesitate to share compliments with strangers. I’ll think, What if they find it awkward? What if I’m intruding? But then I remember how much I’ve appreciated similar moments. A compliment is rarely unwelcome; more often, it’s exactly what someone needs to hear.

So, I’m challenging myself—and maybe you, too—to be more intentional about giving compliments. Not just to friends and family, but to strangers who catch your eye for all the right reasons. Let’s celebrate the things we notice in others: their joy, their effort, their uniqueness, their strength.

The next time you’re out and about, pay attention to the people around you. See someone with a bright scarf that catches your eye? Tell them. Notice someone holding the door open for a string of people? Acknowledge it. You never know how much your words might mean.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness

One of the most beautiful things about a random compliment is the ripple effect it creates. Kindness inspires kindness. When someone receives a genuine compliment, it often fills them with gratitude and encourages them to share that positivity with others.

Imagine if we all lived this way—if we spent more time noticing the good in others and less time focused on our own insecurities or frustrations. What a world that would be.

Let’s Be Brave Together

The next time you feel inspired to compliment someone, don’t hold back. Be brave, be bold, and be the kind of person who notices beauty in unexpected places. In doing so, you’ll not only bring joy to others, but you’ll also enrich your own life in ways you can’t yet imagine.

Who knows? Your kind words might just be the light someone needs to carry them through the day. And isn’t that a beautiful legacy to leave behind, one compliment at a time?

So let’s make it a goal to be generous with our words. The world could always use more kindness, and it starts with us.

A beautiful verse that encapsulates the essence of kindness is found in the book of Ephesians. Ephesians 4:32 encourages us to, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” This scripture reminds us of the transformative power of kindness, urging us to reflect Christ’s love through our actions toward others, whether planned or spontaneous.

Let kindness be the hallmark of your path as you extend grace and compassion to those around you.
